Krambambuli (Serves 10-12)

Both Hungary and Germany claim that this recipe is theirs.  I’m led to believe, from the family who gave it to me, that it is a German punch.  It’s the best thing since Glühwein!  A real Christmas drink – you’ll love it!

What you’ll need: one large pot (or bowl with burner underneath), sugar holder, heat-proof glasses.


2 x 26oz (75cl) bottles of light, dry red wine

2 ½ cups of dark rum (approx 1 pint)

Juice of 2 Oranges

Juice of 1 Lemon

1 Sugar Loaf (or 10oz of sugar cubes)


Pour wine into a wine bowl (or pot) and heat on burner.  Do not allow to boil.  Add orange and lemon juice.  Place the sugar holder across the bowl and add sugar loaf or cubes.  Warm the rum, pour over the sugar and ignite.  When the flames start to subside, add more rum.  The sugar should be melted with the last drop of rum.  You can always add in slices of the fruit if you’re so inclined; and even a few cloves. Stir and serve in heat-proof glasses.

WARNING: You won’t feel the effects until the second glass!
